The People

The Guna Yala People

The Guna Yala people strongly value tradition, autonomy, and community. Despite past conflicts over colonization, they have preserved their way of life and resisted large hotel investments to protect their culture.

While younger generations may adopt more Western styles, they maintain their native language, Dulegaya, alongside Spanish and some English. Although progressive in their views on LGBTQ+ issues, they remain conservative in other aspects, so please dress modestly and respect local customs.

The Guna Yala economy thrives on agriculture, fishing, international trade, and tourism, with coconuts being a key product.

Handcrafted artisan goods like bracelets and “molas,” intricately hand-stitched fabric designs, are also popular, with large molas priced around $15 to $60 USD.

Get ready to immerse yourself in one of the world’s most unique and beautiful cultures on our San Blas tours!
